The Muddy Path – A Zen Koan

Zen Koan

Tanzan and Ekido were once traveling together down a muddy road. A heavy rain was still falling.
Coming around a bend, they met a lovely girl in a silk kimono and sash, unable to cross the intersection.
“Come on, girl” said Tanzan at once. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud.

Ekido did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. Then he no longer could restrain himself. “We monks don’t go near females,” he told Tanzan, “especially not young and lovely ones. It is dangerous. Why did you do that?”

“I left the girl there,” said Tanzan. “Are you still carrying her?”

Well I read your comment on my last entry and I always like to view the BLOGS of those who comment on mine- very interesting stuff here! I would like to add you to my blogroll if you don’t mind.

I usually don’t ask so I am not sure why I am asking now! LOL

The brain is such an exciting thing- well I think it is- the way it works is amazing…and so confusing.

Beautiful koan – I knew a slightly different version, but same message. Thanks for sharing!

Short post yet meaningful. Just wondering….should’nt Tanzan replied “What? Which gal?” instead of remembering her?

However..to some…that question might sound like Tanzan is suffering from Short Term Memory Lost. 😀
